PS3 Slim is True-Along with a $100 Price Drop

on 8/18/09

It turns out Sony's rumored PS3 Slim is true after all. And, if a slimmer, badder PS3 weren't enough, they are also going to drop the price to $299, putting in line with its competitor the Xbox 360.

It will come with a 120GB hard drive (more then my old Dell!) and will be 36% lighter, 32% smaller, and use 34% less power then the original (that's a lot of percents). There will also be a Bravia Sync feature that will allow you to use you Bravia TV remote to control your PS3. It will go on sale in the first week of September, with a $300 price for all the models.

Sony will also be eliminated the option of installing Linux on the Slim so don't even try. (yet...) There will also be a vertical stand that will be selling September 3rd for $24. Also, there will only be 2 USB ports.

Sony's Losses mount

on 5/16/09
Even with Sony's CEO, Howard Stinger, trying to stage a comeback for the company. Sony has reported a $1 billion loss for the fiscal year the ended March 2009, it says its losses will mount to $1.26 billion by the end of the year. Sony, like many electronics companies, has been hit hard by the recession. The failing PSP and PS3 doesn't help too much either.

This Thursday, Sony said it would "ramp up its cost cutting measures". After his start as CEO in '05, Stinger's results aren't really that good. In February, Stinger completely restructured Sony's management, including adding the title of President. All this to try and keep Sony aggressive with companies like Apple and Nintendo. Now all he has to do is bring some life into Sony's product line, a elderly home of gadgets, with old technology, failed ideas, and useless innovations.

Sony also said Thursday that it would be cutting 16,00 jobs and close 6 factories to save $2.6 billion(250 billion yen). It will close 4 factories in Japan and the others in The US, Mexico, France, and Indonesia. Hopefully Sony will be able to dig themselves out of this one.

on 2/20/09

This week saw the announcement if the Nintendo DSi's launch date in America and the closing of Ensemble Studios. Ensemble made such memorable games as the Sid Meier series and the Civilization series. But many other things happened in the gaming world this week.

Nyko's Wii Wand
Nyko showed us at the Consumer Electronics show its new Wiimote alternative. The Nyko Wand
used electronic triggers to transmit data, unlike the Wiimote, that uses mechanical triggers. The Wand will has larger buttons than the Wiimote, and does not feel cheap, though it looks that way. It also has a wireless Nunchuck (they call it a Kama) that, because of the eletronic triggers can vibrate. The Wand "Core Pack" will have the wirless Kama and the Nyko Wand. There is also another package they come in, The Wand "Action Pack" that has a Pistol Grip Accessory that, unlike the Wii Zapper, uses electonic input to map the users presses, similar to a Guitar Hero 3 Wii Controller.
