Facebook dabbles in Webmail with Project Titan

on 2/5/10
Let's face it, Facebook messaging, well, stinks.  There have been small upgrades here and there but it is still not useful.  But, according to Tech Crunch, Facebook is retooling the code to make it like a Webmail client.  Could this be a Gmail killer?

According to the source at Tech Crunch, Project Titan, as it is unofficialy named, will "be something people flock to".  Apparently, it will be a full Webmail client, IMAP and POP support. Apparently the format for the email will utilize your vanity url, for example: "geekular@facebook.com".  If Facebook plays their cards right, this could be "the next big thing", since they already are the largest social network in the United States.

This appears to be part of Facebook's recent push to expand beyond a social network. They have added applications and games, similar to the Apple App Store.  They have also implemented Facebook Connect, which is in the same vein as OpenID. But, to make it an entire communication hub could really be what they're after.

These days we're seeing a lot more services for integration of different networks and websites.  The entire purpose of Google Chrome OS is to integrate all this.  For example, you can access Facebook from any mobile phone or computer through their website.  Facebook also has applications for Xbox LIVE, WebOS, iPhone, Android, and Blackberry.  So, this could be Facebook's final step in making them a household name for communication services.
